Moldova Secures Loan from World Bank to Drive Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings
CHIȘINĂU, MOLDOVA - 08 August 2024 - The Republic of Moldova took a significant step towards a more energy-efficient future today with the signing of a loan agreement with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The agreement will provide funding for the "Sustainable Transition towards Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM)" project, which aims to significantly reduce energy consumption in public buildings across the country.
The signing ceremony, held at [Locația evenimentului] at 1:00 PM, marked the culmination of extensive collaboration between the Moldovan government and the World Bank. The loan will be used to implement energy efficiency upgrades in 46 educational institutions, including model schools selected in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
"The most secure and cheapest energy is the energy we don't need," stated the Minister of Energy during the ceremony. "This project reflects our commitment to tackling the pressing issue of energy waste in Moldova. By investing in energy efficiency, we are not only reducing our dependence on energy imports, but also creating jobs and fostering economic growth."
The STEEM project will focus on improving the energy performance of buildings through measures such as upgrading thermal insulation, installing individual heating points, and optimizing energy consumption patterns. The initiative is expected to generate significant energy savings, allowing the government to repay the loan using the funds saved on energy costs.
"This project is not simply about energy efficiency, it's about economic growth," added the Minister of Energy. "These funds will be invested in construction works, creating jobs and adding value to the Moldovan economy."
The STEEM project is the first in a series of initiatives planned under the Moldova Energy Efficiency Program, supported by donor partners. The project will also serve as a pilot for an innovative financing mechanism developed in partnership with the World Bank, designed to facilitate investments in energy efficiency in public buildings across Moldova.
"We are pleased to be partnering with Moldova on this important initiative," remarked a representative from the World Bank. "The STEEM project is a crucial step towards a more sustainable and energy-secure future for Moldova."
The Moldovan government and the World Bank are confident that the STEEM project will serve as a model for other countries in the region, demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of investing in energy efficiency.
